The board certified orthopedic surgeons of the Charlotte Shoulder Institute and Novant Health Orthopedic and Sports Medicine are based out of Charlotte Orthopaedic Hospital in Charlotte, NC and Matthews, NC. This facility is nationally recognized and is one of the few facilities in the world focused specifically on orthopaedic injuries.

We offer particular expertise in minimally invasive surgery, arthroscopy, instability management, rotator cuff repair, fracture care, arthritis and joint replacement, and complex shoulder issues related to failed prior procedures.

James R. Romanowski, M.D. is a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in shoulder surgery, complex knee reconstruction, sports medicine, and the treatment of athletic injuries. Having trained with many of the world's leading shoulder, knee, and sports medicine surgeons, he has established himself as a nationally recognized expert in the care of active individuals and athletes of all levels.

Dr. Romanowski currently serves as a Clinical Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine and has lectured nationally and internationally, including teaching at Harvard Medical School. From 2017–2026, he served as the Head Team Orthopedic Surgeon for the NBA's Charlotte Hornets and has worked with athletes from the NBA, NFL, NHL, MLS, USL, and NCAA Division I programs.

Recognized as a Charlotte Magazine Top Doctor for twelve consecutive years, Dr. Romanowski is committed to delivering state-of-the-art orthopedic care that helps patients return to peak performance and active lifestyles.
