WELCOME TO THE CHARLOTTE SHOULDER INSTITUTE

The Charlotte Shoulder Institute offers complete care of shoulder problems affecting people from Charlotte and beyond. Work related trauma, recreational and professional athletic injuries, as well as painful degenerative shoulder problems that inevitably come with age fall within the broad spectrum of disorders that our physicians treat.

The board certified orthopedic surgeons of the Charlotte Shoulder Institute and Novant Health Orthopedic and Sports Medicine are based out of Charlotte Orthopaedic Hospital in Charlotte, NC and Matthews, NC. This facility is nationally recognized and is one of the few facilities in the world focused specifically on orthopaedic injuries.

We offer particular expertise in minimally invasive surgery, arthroscopy, instability management, rotator cuff repair, fracture care, arthritis and joint replacement, and complex shoulder issues related to failed prior procedures.

James R. Romanowski, M.D. has trained with many of the world’s leading shoulder and sports surgeons. He has taught at Harvard Medical School and given presentations around the world. Dr. Romanowski is currently the head team orthopedic surgeon for the NBA Charlotte Hornets and has experience working with professional athletes from the 2019 US Women’s Soccer World Cup Champions, MLS Soccer, Super Bowl Champion Pittsburgh Steelers and NHL Stanley Cup Pittsburgh Penguins, USL Charlotte Independence, as well as NCAA Division I athletes. He was selected to provide orthopedic care to the 2019 NBA All-Star Game in Charlotte, NC. He also provided orthopedic coverage for the 2019 ACC Basketball Tournament won by the Duke University Blue Devils. With an extensive sports medicine background, he has served as an assistant team physician for NFL, NBA, and NHL franchises. He is currently a team physician with the Charlotte Hornets and head orthopedist for the Charlotte Independence professional soccer team. As one of the few surgeons in the United States to have fellowship training in both Shoulder/Elbow Surgery and complex knee reconstruction, he offers expertise for both adolescents and adults with upper and lower extremity conditions. More recently, he was awarded a 2020 "TOP DOC" designation by Charlotte Magazine for the seventh year in a row.

 
 

Marcus Cook, M.D. is a fellowship trained sports medicine specialist. He has extensive experience working with athletes at every level as well as ‘weekend-warriors.’ With over 10 year of NBA experience, he was also selected to provide orthopedic care to the 2019 NBA All-Star Game in Charlotte, NC. He provided orthopedic coverage for the 2019 ACC Basketball Tournament won by the Duke University Blue Devils. He has a passion for sports and was himself a collegiate swimmer and is an avid golfer.
